Māori Component

Papa Taumata-Higher Ground

As part of our commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi, Papa Taumata offers a comprehensive bi-cultural component, embracing the many healing aspects woven through the Māori culture:

  • Taha wairua      (spirituality)
  • Taha tinana       (physical)
  • Taha hinengaro (mental)
  • Taha whanau    (whanau)
Wāirua focused, whānau driven
Ehara tāku toa i te takitahi, he toa takitini. Its not by my effort alone that I stand, but that of the many

What’s Involved:

Residents acquire tools to add to their kete (basket) of knowledge through mediums such as karakia, te reo, haka, and waiata.

They re-discover some of their mana lost through alcohol and drug use.

There are five Marae noho each year, and senior residents attend these for two nights

A Kaupapa Whānau Oranga parenting group is also held once a week.

At completion of the program there is a paua ceremony. Clients who commit to and complete 90  12 step meetings in 90 days return for a pounamu ceremony to celebrate their success in early recovery.
