Admissions to Higher Ground Papa Taumata

Understanding our entry requirements and first enquiry

To come to our programmes you need to meet the following requirements.

You need to be a New Zealand resident aged 18+ and experiencing severe addiction.

You need to be living in Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau or the Waikato region, unless you are experiencing methamphetamine addiction, in which case we can take you no matter where you live.

Taking ownership of seeking help is a significant part of making positive changes. The best option is to call or email us yourself and we can make an appointment to talk.

How much?

Most people in our programme qualify for financial support through Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) benefits.

WINZ pays a portion of the benefit directly to Higher Ground Papa Taumata to cover your living expenses. We can give you information and support you to arrange this.

Most of the time, there is no further payment.

If you don’t qualify for a WINZ benefit the weekly charge is $185.

Real Stories

"I wish I came to a place like this 10 years ago, with my daughter. Maybe things might have been different …It can take just one small change, and all it took for me was to walk through those doors."

First steps into the programme

What you need to know

Coming in for an appointment is a first step. It takes about 90 minutes.

You’re welcome to bring someone to support you. We’ll have a kōrero about what you are going through, what’s important to you, your alcohol and drug use, health, whānau, work and legal history.

Together we’ll figure out if Higher Ground Papa Taumata is a good option for you. If so, we’ll plan a date for you to come into the programme and what you can do to prepare for the programme.

If our programme is not right for you, we’ll provide information about other options.

Before you start

Before you start your live-in programme

The time between your assessment and moving into Higher Ground Papa Taumata can be hard. Staying in touch is really important. We’ll make a plan together that works for you.

Usually, you’ll be invited to come to appointments, attend groups and spend some time alongside the Higher Ground Papa Taumata community so you get a sense of what the programme is like. Some people need extra support for withdrawal or other health needs. We’ll help arrange that if you need it.
